a day for books and for roses
On April 23rd of every year, “Dia de Sant Jordi” carries a special meaning for the people of Catalunya and the Balearic Islands. While most “saint days” usually mean an extra day off, Dia de Sant Jordi celebrates an old tradition, and with it…returns a fresh breath of air.
On this day, the ritual is simple— women gift their husbands a book and the men gift their wives a rose. For weeks leading up to April 23rd, book stores are buzzing with curiosity, and on the morning of the 23rd, flower stalls are overflowing with rose buds and bouquets. A special scene unfolds when men and women of all ages walk the cobblestone streets with long-stemmed roses or hardcover books tucked underneath their arm en route to their yearly exchange. Mark your calendars for April 23rd, or better yet, partake in this ritual at random, and indulge in the wholesomeness of Dia de Sant Jordi.
You’re lucky to witness it, but even luckier if you practice it.
