café con libros

Whether you have a beauty regiment in place or an early work out, how you start your morning sets the tone for the rest of the day. Morning rituals are sacred and yet, there’s one feel-good ritual that feels a bit endangered.

Reading while having your morning coffee.

Reading the paper alongside a café con leche seems to be a morning ritual preserved by the older generation and over time has evolved into a coffee thermos in one hand and a smartphone news feed in the other. Why not start the day like the older generation does— with the smell of strong coffee, and in the presence of words?

If a newspaper isn’t your first choice, reach for the book you’re currently reading, a funky magazine, or better yet, snag a coffee table book, and flip through glossy pages of interesting stories and colorful photographs while you wait for your drink to cool down.

We’ve become the generation that consumes nearly everything on a small screen. We wake up, turn to our phones, and immediately enter an algorithm with potential to go down endless rabbit holes. By detouring from social media (even if it’s just to turn a few pages while sipping on coffee), we’ll begin to feel less tethered to a digital space and more connected to the present moment.

My proposal to you:
More coffee in mugs and less coffee to-go.
More page flipping and less screen scrolling.
And if not everyday, then every once in a while.

When we practice our gentle rituals, we perform acts of kindness to ourselves.

Now have yourself “un café con libros” tomorrow morning and enjoy
